Electronic Cigarettes; A Safer Smoking Alternative?

Electronic cigarettes are being hailed around the globe as the safer smoking alternative. But what are they, how do they work and why are they so popular?

To answer the question of what they are, electronic cigarettes are designed to simulate the look, feel and effect of smoking tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars. They are battery powered devices that deliver nicotine in a vaporised state, once inhaled by their users.

The electronic cigarette is non-flammable and involves no actual tobacco smoke or tobacco. This is why the electronic cigarette is considered the safer alternative to smoking.

People who buy electronic cigarettes will see that the devices work by way of advanced microelectronic technology that gives smokers the nicotine dose that they crave. One of the benefits of buying an electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is that they are re-usable and have refillable and replaceable parts however a number of disposable e-cigarettes have been developed.

Many electronic cigarettes are designed to look like real cigarettes and comprise of very few main parts including; a rechargeable battery, an atomisation chamber and a replaceable nicotine cartridge.

They work when a user inhales on the e-cigarette, and then liquid nicotine held inside the nicotine chamber is drawn into the atomisation chamber. The power from the battery heats up the liquid and results in the user inhaling nicotine vapour.

Instead of exhaling smoke, a vapour is emitted that comprises of mainly water vapour and excess nicotine vapour. It is odourless and it is claimed that smoking e-cigarettes does not run the risk of passive smoking.

This is why electronic cigarettes are considered a safer option and why they are becoming increasingly popular. Recent studies have shown that it is tobacco as opposed to nicotine that causes most smoking related deaths and illnesses.

Despite this, there are still restrictions in place regarding the use of electronic cigarettes for example they are not considered suitable for any person under 18 years of age or for use by non-smokers.

Electronic cigarettes are currently unrestricted in the United Kingdom and United States however, in Brazil, Canada, Panama and Singapore, the sale and use of electronic cigarettes is forbidden. Electronic cigarettes without nicotine are permitted in Australia and Denmark and in New Zealand, electronic cigarettes can only be sold as a registered medicine.
